Homebirth...I want to....but.....

by MeriBeth Glenn of Merry Blessings Birth Service ( 20-Apr-2012 )

So you have researched it and you are loving the idea of a home birth. You really think it sounds wonderful! BUT..... you just aren't sure.

I understand exactly where you are at. I could give you all the many reasons to have your baby at home and try to convince you as to why home birth is the best option. But that's not my job. I am here to facilitate your home birth not convince you to do it..... Because I can't do it for you. I can't make you believe in yourself and the birthing process. I can't make you understand that you were meant to give birth and that the process works---- even for first timers ------and even for first time mothers that have a history of inevitably taking the unconventional, non-textbook route. (which btw, we specialize in that because all of the women we help aren't textbook---nor are the expected to be! They are expected to be individuals birthing another unique individual called to their own path within God's timing.) I can't convince you that you need to take your thoughts captive and replace them with scriptures that edify you and transform you by the renewing of your mind. But neither can I express enough the wonders of and joy of and peace of being newly postpartum and lying back in your own bed, with your new born cuddled up on your chest...... And the absolute bliss of not having to fight to keep your baby with you or have the headache of refusing routine newborn care. .... And having your husband be a direct part of the process as opposed to an after thought. I can't do any of that. But I can tell that should you decide to home birth, we will take time during your visits to begin removing the indoctrination of needing to be in a clinical setting to birth. I can also tell you that it isn't so much the place of birth as much as it is the actual process itself that has you on edge. To that reality I would like to encourage you to know that birth isn't this dreadful thing that makes you want to lash out at your husband and claw his eyes out. On the contrary. It is very normal for a husband and wife to be very endearing and tender to one another during this journey into parenthood together. It's quite remarkable when you think about it and it humbles me each time I am honored to witness the process. Birth itself is quite amazing but all of the other things that go with it: the making of a woman into a mother, the man into a father, the couple into a family, the meeting of a child to his/her father and mother.... The support of a husband to his wife...... It's all those things that mix together that make me so honored to be apart of such an amazing process! I mean honestly, would you have planned your honeymoon at you local medical center? Would you have wanted a doctor or nurse checking in you throughout your wedding night to make sure that the two of you were becoming "one" correctly..... stopping you at key moments to assess penetration and give you position pointers and critique your "method"? Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Not when you've seen the differences between birth in the intimate setting of your home and the "sterile" setting of a hospital and even the clinical setting of a birth center. To me it all connects. But for you, a birth center may be appropriate because you had your honeymoon in a hotel and there's a subtle correlation there.:P All joking aside, we are happy to give you any further information that might help you in your decision making process. Feel free to schedule a free consultation to meet with our midwives and ask questions. There's no pressure. Should you decide it's right for you, it will be an honor and priviledge to serve you in your homebirthing decision.
