Any musician or music fan can tell you that live music is always better than recorded versions. Often local music scenes have shows for great bands and musicians. A local blues festival in North Carolina can be a great introduction into blues music and culture.

History Of Blues

Blues originated in the southern United States by African-Americans in the late 1800’s. It is based off of the folk music and work songs of the era. Even from the beginning, this genre of music was part of a larger cultural structure and embodied the emotions of the musicians. Like all progressive music, it was originally written off as music of the devil. It was blamed for sparking violence and other unacceptable acts. Even in to the early 20th century, blues was not accepted into mainstream music culture. Music is constantly evolving, so not only was this genre eventually accepted into mainstream music but also there are subgenres and regional variations.

Local Music Scenes

Going to popular concerts to see live music can be expensive, which makes local music scenes a great alternative. It is not always easy to break in and find a favorite niche, but it is worth the time and effort. Asking friends is a great place to start the search. Local clubs and venues usually have calendars and upcoming shows posted. One place that is often looked over is the local music store. Most likely the employees work with the local bands and musicians, being music enthusiasts themselves. At the very least they would have flyers for bands and venues. Music festivals are a great way to find talented bands and music groups. Festivals involve and showcase multiple groups and solo artists from the same genre. Additionally, they usually involve a lot more than just music. Often they incorporate food, dance, crafts and other cultural highlights. These types of events immerse participants in the culture and excitement of the genre.

Live Music Is Best

Blues music has become ingrained in American culture. It has influenced rock and roll, R&B, and even pop music. Chances are blues music or blues musicians have inspired the music or musicians you love. This genre of music is such a part of our musical and cultural heritage; listening to it live is an experience. Live music forces the audience or listeners to make a connection physically and emotionally. Participating in a blues festival in North Carolina is a great way to experience the culture and unique sound of blues music.
