Have you ever purchasede a wood sign for your home, office, or cabin and not long after it starts to look dull? The reason is that most "Wood Sign" shops treat your sign with a run of the mill water based "clear coat" to make your sign look like they cared about it. If this is your situation then simply do the following. As long as your sign is not past the point of no return then you can clean up the surface of your sign with 220 grit sand paper and then with a 320 grit to give it an ultra smooth feel. Next, if you have an air compressor blow away the excess dust you just created. If you don't happen to have one then take a dry towel and whipe away the dust and next a damp towel to make sure your sign is completely free of dust. Let the moisture dry completely. Next, apply a coat of "Marine Grade" Spar Urethane or Spar Varnish and let that dry. This usually takes about 24 hours but that all depends on the air temperature. After its dry you may repeat these steps as many times as you like using only 320 grit sanding paper. Remember, the more coats you have, the better protected your sign is and the longer it will last!
