It is amazing how many consumers buy small wooden boxes to use around their home. This may seem rather silly at first, but the longer you think about it, the clearer it becomes that these special storage units can actually be both decorative and functional. What is there not to like?
Wooden keepsake boxes can be used to organize a lot of items around the house. While the name gives you the impression that these containers should only be used for mementos, they can actually store just about any collection of small items. Do you have trouble finding a good place for your thimbles? Did your son bring home a bag of precious marbles? Are you always buying earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry pieces? Why not store all these amazing treasures in wooden trinket boxes?
Covered boxes can be a nice addition to any room. When you have decorated a space in e.g. a jungle or animal theme, you can fill an empty space with boxes covered in zebra or leopard print. You can leave the lid on, or tilt it slightly sideways when you have filled the inside with, for instance, potpourri. Why only make a room look like the wilderness when you can make it even more realistic with a matching scent.
The quality liner inside the small wooden boxes makes this storage option very attractive. Nothing that is placed inside will be dented or scratched because of hard surfaces. Delicate glass or crystal objects will be completely safe. The plain color inside is also a nice contrast to the print on the outside.
Do not be afraid to use your wooden trinket boxes in every room of the house. These units can hold paperclips at the home office, or cotton balls in the bathroom. In the kitchen, you can keep your bottles stoppers or wineglass rings in them. Find a spot for them in the kids’ rooms to hold some of their smaller toys. The options are endless.
Aside from being practical around the house, wooden keepsake boxes can also be used as gifts or wrapping. Simply put your present in the container, and attach a nice bow on top of the lid. Do not forget to add a wish card. The right words can make any special moment even more memorable. When you use this gift-wrap option, select a fabric pattern that will suit the recipient’s home decor and taste. With so many patterns to choose from, you should be able to find a box that is perfect all-around.
Wooden storage boxes are certainly one option in the effort to organize. Depending on the condition and basic quality of the boxes they may be used more as a decorative item, perhaps even a table. Unfinished wood has a very "college" feel and is probably not for anyone with a job and a life after college! Given the style of box and appearance, the boxes can be a great addition, very artsy!! I'm thinking here more of wine crates, which I have used to great advantage.
If you will use wine boxes it is advisable to spray then with a mild solution of bleach, i.e. two tablespoons to about a gallon of water. The bleach will kill any lurking insect infestations and have the added benefit of making them smell clean. A good latex paint in the color of your choice should do the trick.
Wood is by nature a strong product, and again, depending on the source, will serve well as storage for vinyl records or even metal parts. Probably not a good medium to build a house with, unless you are putting up an ice house in Minnesota. If you really need wood for a house, bite the bullet and buy something appropriate.
Believe it or not, some people have no idea where to get "wooden boxes" and would pay money. I have gotten them from my local wine merchant who was actually willing to pay me to take them away. They can be stacked to a certain extent (about 3 high) but without attention will just look like bare wood and ugly.
Do not try to build a wall of stackable wooden storage boxes. You will just regret it...trust me. Store what's appropriate and remember your creativity in using boxes for storage. Also, consider overhead garage storage racks to save space.
