Three Tips to Know When Redecorating the Interior of Your Home

by Art Gibb, freelance writer on behalf of IG Interiors, LLC ( 11-Dec-2012 )

The living room is the face of your home because this is what most of your visitors will see when they walk through your door. So if you're unhappy with how your living room looks, but you have no idea how to accomplish that without breaking your bank account. Just ask for help from interior decorating services, any one of these will know exactly how to help you. Interior designers are trained in the art of making a client's home beautiful. However, you may be more interested in trying to decorate your living room by yourself. So here are some thoughts that would be going through an interior designer's head when recreating a client's room.

Color Scheme

As an artist, a designer knows what colors compliment each other and which ones that don't. Usually the guideline is to choose colors adjacent to each other on the color wheel. But that guideline doesn't always have to be followed as there are some color schemes with colors on the opposite sides of the wheel. Someone who isn't an interior designer should tread carefully in this area because if it isn't done right, then the results might not be pretty. What kind of atmosphere you want the room to have should also be considered when choosing a color scheme. Light and pastel colors suggest a cheerful and happy atmosphere. White will make a room feel bigger than it actually is. On the other hand, darker colors make a room feel smaller and more comfortable like a hug.

Focal Point

In a room, a focal point is the point of interest, something that will draw the eyes when you first enter the room. Usually the focal point will be the biggest feature of a room like a fireplace or your television. If you don't have something like that try creating a flower bouquet or setting up family pictures on the wall or a book case. As soon as you've identified your focal point in your living room you can adjust the furniture to face or angle towards the focal point. But don't just line up all of your couches and chairs in a row, they should be clustered together in a way that will invite conversation.

Symmetry

Symmetry is when one half is a reflection of the other half, so in a room symmetry means proportionate and balanced decoration. Symmetry often comes hand in hand with the focal point of a room. Depending on where the focal point is determines what kind of symmetry there will be in the room. Be it reflection symmetry, rotational symmetry or transitional symmetry. But with some focal points a room would look better with asymmetry where one half of the room wouldn't look like the other. This kind of non-symmetry can give a room a contemporary feel to it as it allows the eye to travel around the room. However, the rest of the objects in the room should be proportional to each other. The tips listed here are only a fraction of what an interior designer would be thinking about when redesigning a room. So if you don't feel comfortable decorating your living room or any other room on your own then please look for interior design services that would love to help you create the right look for your home.
