SKY Education celebrates with families with Spectrum Kids Yoga, Meditation, and Life Skills Support. In my 5 years of teaching children with special needs, my experience has shown me that Love is the true gem that ties us all together. Parents and children are my greatest teachers showing great prowess as they mount hurdles, overcome obstacles, and stretch to capacities and excel.
I believe as teacher my role is to Model, Motivate, and Mirror. I choose these as my criterion as each has a specific goal with the purpose of enriching our mututal performance. First, I am firm in my stance that in order to get my lessons across, I shall practice what I teach. Therefore, I model my reflective skills in my character, speech, and actions. Second, I am able to motivate my students through interactive, creative, and supportive lessons, encouraging them to share and grow their abilities. Finally, mirroring the wisdom gained is an essential part of understanding how far we have come and where we need to go. By holding a mirror, I refer to helping the student recognize tell tale signs of what triggers stress and also recognize how to respong healthfully to those triggers.
In relation to the education of managing stress, the topic is forever current.
Students have been my greatest teachers, often inspiring improptu lessons I haven’t yet considered. I have learned to be in the moment in order to handle surprises as they arise because I am aware that challenges are teaching moments. My experience with teaching children within the Autism Spectrum has made me keenly aware of the benefits of being non-judgmental, determined, and committed to what is best for the student.
