Motor Vehicle Accident: First Steps

The minutes and days following a car accident can be physically and emotionally painful.  Following the proper steps to ensure you are protecting your rights is essential to the outcome of your personal injury lawsuit in Boston.

Check on Involved Parties

After you have made sure that you and the passengers in your vehicle are safe, and do not appear to be injured, check on the other involved parties.  Be sure everyone is responsive.

Call the Authorities

Call the local authorities to report the accident.  If anyone appears to be hurt make sure you let the emergency dispatcher know immediately.  The health and safety of everyone involved will determine which emergency responders will arrive on the scene.  Be prepared to give a detailed account of the accident to the police when they arrive.  Make sure to ask the officer where and when you can collect a copy of the police report.

Trade Information

Trade contact and insurance information with everyone involved.  Also make sure to get the contact information of any possible witnesses.  Having witness accounts will only strengthen your case.

See a Medical Professional

Even if you do not believe that you have been injured in the accident it is wise to see a medical professional.  He or she will give you a complete medical exam to determine if you have in fact been injured.   If they find that you have suffered an injury the doctor will provide a medical report that will be used during the insurance settlement or litigation process.  Should you choose to forgo medical help and begin feeling symptoms later, go to a hospital immediately.

Contact an Auto Accident Attorney

Hiring an experienced attorney who deals with Boston auto accidents is extremely important.  Your attorney will guide you through the negotiation process with the insurance company and represent you if your case goes to court.  Together you and your attorney will go over your case and determine the amount of compensation to which you are entitled.  At this point your attorney will deal with the insurance company on your behalf.
