K-9 Operational Readiness Procedure

by Canine Supervisor Richard Tom Brenneman of Kansas Police Dogs ( 13-Jun-2012 )

1.  First test requires one room no bigger than an average living room in a house. Person in charge of test should make sure nothing that could hurt the dog and or no narcotics in the room. Also the k-9 unit will not know what is going on except a test, other than that they are not to be told anything about the test.

     A.  After this is done, K-9 unit is brought into the room and told to sniff the room with the k-9 and advise what he or she finds or nothing at all.  For this test their will be nothing in the room for the k-9 to alert to.  The handler should tell you nothing was found.

     B.  Second test will be the same size of room if possible and not the same room. Two or three people will wash their hands with hot water and soap and then dry their hands good, they will walk around the room touching walls and other items in the room. After they are done the k-9 unit will be brought into the room and told only to sniff the room for us, and see if there is narcotics in the room.  For this test there should be no alert or anything found.

      C.  Third test will be in the same size of room if can be found and not any of the rooms you have used before.  This test will be actual narcotics hidden in this room and scent is available.  The K-9 unit is brought in and asked to sniff the room for narcotics.  The k-9 unit should show an alert and should tell the test people were and that he had an alert.

      D.  Fourth test is shredded money obtained from the Federal Reserve Bank that has not been circulated to people. This shredded money shall be placed into a hidden place in the same size of rooms before and not one of the same rooms used before. The K-9 unit than enters and is asked to sniff the room.  After the K-9 Unit has completed his sniff he should tell you that no alerts were found and the k-9 did not alert on anything.

      E.  Test number five will have the actual money that was found by the k-9 unit.  This money is placed into a hiding place in the same size of room as all the other and not one of the others you have used must be a new room.  The k-9 unit is brought into the room and asked to sniff. If the k-9 unit shows odor response and or an alert to this money, through all your training you have shown Operational Readiness for the street and that the k-9 only alerts to the odor of narcotics and not to the odor of other items.

     F.  The test conducted above should be supervised by an experienced canine person. It is up to the department’s option to video this sniff; I would video if this was I conducting the test.
