Philosophy Behind the Bio Box & Bio Box Filter patent pending
by Lammert de Haan ( Inventor & President of DAS Aquariums )
After a lifetime building, observing & maintaining aquariums, I know one thing:
The Laws Of Nature are KEY to Successful Aquarium Keeping
With that in mind, I developed the BIO BOX & BIO BOX FILTER
No Gimmicks – No Expensive Media or Cartridge replacements to buy
BIO BOX
Most Aquarium Hobbyists know all about the Nitrogen Cycle. Ammonia enters the tank through fish waste, decaying food, etc. Aquatic Plants feed on the ammonia and absorb heavy metals like Cadmium, Zinc, Lead & Copper which are all harmful to fish. Bacteria in the aquarium changes ammonia to nitrite (toxic) then to nitrate (non toxic in low doses). To obtain bacteria, a traditional aquarium needs to cycle for weeks. Many types of mechanical, chemical & biological filters are available. These filters are all designed to maintain this cycle as well as filter particles out of the water. A lot of these filters are complicated and expensive with lots of media & cartridges to buy and replace. Some may even be too powerful and will compete with plants for ammonia, causing plants to die or stop thriving. In nature, Aquatic Plants & Bacteria-Rich Soil break down ammonia & nitrites. No body of water can exist without Plants & Bacteria-Rich soil. The same is key for a successful Freshwater Aquarium. This is why I developed the Bio Box & the Bio Box Filter. The Bio-Box provides the Bacteria Rich Soil needed while at the same time containing the soil so it will not cloud the water. The holes on top covered with filter material allow the roots of the plants to settle in the dirt. It's a simple, yet extremely effective approach to keeping a successful, Natural, and most of all Chemical Free Freshwater Aquarium.
BIO BOX FILTER
A power-head pulls the water through the gravel where bacteria grows to break down waste products. A simple yet effective filtration method. I've tested this filter for several years in our own AquaPlantariums in our Showroom. Anyone is invited to come visit us to see how these tanks are thriving with virtual no maintenance.
WHAT IS AN AQUAPLANTARIUM?
After 40 years of manufacturing and maintaining aquariums, I was dreaming about an aquarium with easy access without obstructing the view. After that many years, I grew tired of removing lids, lights, canopies just to access the aquariums for routine maintenance, etc. I envisioned a Push Glass Window.
The PUSH GLASS WINDOW is a slanted glass window which opens with a simple push and then slides up to rest on top of the Aquarium. It creates an unique pond-like view with the easy access I was looking for: No lights or Canopy to remove. It also provides an enclosed habitat which contains humidity for optimal tropical plant growth.
I added a Background Ledge with Waterfall to complete my vision of the perfect tank. The Waterfall adds water movement and tranquility. The ledges provide space for Tropical Air Plants, Amphibians, Crabs or my personal favorite, mud skippers.
