Many people have heard of the genius of past composers like Amadeus Mozart, and the rumors abound about putting headphones on a pregnant woman’s belly. It seems that learning music has no negative consequences. In case you need more convincing, following are a few reasons to consider NJ music lessons for your child, including brain development, discipline skills, self-expression, and acceptance to college.

Brain Development

Studies have shown that music wires the brain in specific ways, especially on the left side. This kind of circuit-making can only help a person. The reading of music has benefits in mathematical terms as well; reading music can be a great way to understand fractions and other concepts. This brain wiring has widespread benefits as it can help kids to be better problem solvers and be better prepared for their tasks ahead of time. Those who have musical ability also perform better in school, getting better grades (largely due to preparation and problem solving).

Discipline and Commitment

In an age where egocentricity and the “I want it yesterday” mentality are taking over, NJ music lessons can benefit kids by teaching them discipline and commitment. A difficult piece cannot be played immediately, so they will realize that learning that popular song on the radio takes a lot of practice and preparation. Working to achieve something is a lesson that can never be overstated. They can also gain confidence as they take risks and overcome hurdles because of hard work.

Healthy Self-Expression and Social Skills

Many young kids who need an outlet for their feelings often resort to unhealthy means of doing so, like substance abuse. Some express themselves verbally, others through writing, and others still through drawing. But music is also an avenue for healthy expression and venting, which can keep an adolescent balanced and confident. Confidence can also come from being surrounded by like-minded peers in a safe environment where everyone is working to achieve a musical goal.

College and Beyond

As if the aforementioned reasons for NJ music lessons aren’t enough, there are still others. Naturally, the brain development and academic success have longer-term outcomes, like acceptance to college. When institutions of higher education see that a student has been committed to learning an instrument, they also know that this commitment will continue on in classes. These students have talent to bring to their campus. Being able to put these skills on applications and resumes is invaluable for a student’s future. The skills they have learned will enable them to be successful in their academic and other endeavors. It would be worthwhile to invest in developing this skill.
